I can hear Andy Williams singing that timeless classic in my mind this weekend. Why? Because football starts tomorrow. The Georgia High School Athletic Association says August 1 is the earliest opening date for high school football camps. The SEC has its teams in camp and the NFL has averted a strike and will play football this fall. All of my teams are currently tied for first. This is the time of year filled with possibility, no lumps of coal bad calls yet, no switches from jumping off sides on a critical third down, now is the most wonderful time of the year.
My one son played on a particularly bad high school team and the summer before he left he was with some teammates who were talking about winning state. Talk about not knowing what you don’t know, they had won a total of three or four games the preceding three seasons and now talk of winning state. But the most wonderful time of the year can do that to you, anything is possible. The Gators have a new coaching staff and plenty of talent and the SEC east is weak, except USC who is good in a down season for the rest of the east, so who knows.
The NFL will have an abbreviated off-season and a whirlwind of a free agency period but my fantasy football league team will be stout, I just know it. And my son’s high school team should do very well this year as they have most of the skill players back and some young guys looking to step into the varsity spots on the line. Yes, it is the most wonderful time of the year.
